Arthur Carthew (1799-1879)
Lt.-Colonel Arthur Carthew J.P., Deputy Collector of Customs, Toronto
Carthew was a Cornishman who was placed in half-pay in 1822 when a Lieutenant with the 64th Regiment of Foot. Shortly afterwards, he came to Upper Canada where he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Collector of Customs at Toronto. His fiancée was tragically killed when inspecting the works at their new home, Lawton Park, which he then promptly sold. He died at Russell House, Orillia, Ontario.
