Arthur Carthew (1799-1879)

Lt.-Colonel Arthur Carthew J.P., Deputy Collector of Customs, Toronto

Carthew was a Cornishman who was placed in half-pay in 1822 when a Lieutenant with the 64th Regiment of Foot. Shortly afterwards, he came to Upper Canada where he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Collector of Customs at Toronto. His fiancĂ©e was tragically killed when inspecting the works at their new home, Lawton Park, which he then promptly sold. He died at Russell House, Orillia, Ontario.
