Belle (Key) Zborowski (1830-1873)
Mrs. "Belle" Ann Isabel (Key) Hewitt, Zborowski; died in Paris
She was the daughter of Peyton Randolph Key, Ship's Captain, of Louisville, Kentucky, who named his ship the Belle Key. She came to Paris from Louisiana after the Civil War in 1866 to put her "little blonde daughter" into Mme. Grenfell's school. An article published in 1869 reported, "among the many famous beauties... none were ever so much admired, probably, as the brilliant and fascinating Miss Belle Key, who married the late Col. James Hewitt C.S.A... and after remaining in great seclusion abroad was married to a distinguished and wealthy Polish gentleman (read the notes on Martin Zborowski), residing in New York, about a year ago. The happy couple are now visiting Poland. The Warsaw Courier of Nov. 2 (reported)... 'at the theatre... was seated a lady, splendid in beauty and glittering in precious stones... we have never seen such a diadem as that which crowned the classic brow of this beautiful creature; and so, also, with the collar of oriental pearls of great price, joined by stars of diamonds, yet even less perfect than the neck which they surrounded. We are informed that the husband of the lady belongs to one of our illustrious families, a member of which settled in America 200-years ago, and that he and his wife are now on a visit to this country where his ancestors - its honor and its glory - formerly lived. These distinguished personages have already travelled for some years in Europe and intend to honor Warsaw with their presence for a few weeks.'"
