Andrew Paterson (1784-1860)

Merchant, of Paterson, Young & Co., Quebec City

He was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, and came out to Canada at the age of fourteen in 1798. He went into business with his brother, John, as a senior partner in Paterson, Young & Co., General Merchants and Importers, of Quebec. He was later joined by his cousin, John Greenshields (1785-1869) who retired in 1842 to Kerse House, Lanarkshire. Andrew remained in Quebec at 12 Rampart Street and was President of the St. Andrew's Society and a founding member of the Quebec Curling Club. In 1812, at Montreal, he married Betsey Wickware of Vermont and they were the parents of fourteen children, of whom nine (listed above) lived to adulthood.
