Alfred Thomas Shaughnessy (1897-1916)
Hon. "Fred" Shaughnessy, Captain in the Canadian Grenadier Guards; KIA at Ypres
He was born in Montreal and was educated at Bishop's College School; Abingdon (England); and, McGill University. He began his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway before joining Charles Meredith & Co., as a stockbroker. In 1911, he married Sarah Polk Bradford, daughter of Judge Bradford of Nashville, Tennessee, and a descendant of Col. William Polk who was a first cousin of U.S. President James K. Polk. They lived at 217 Pine Avenue, Montreal, and had three children. During World War I, he joined the 60th Battalion of the Canadian Grenadier Guards, and was killed by shrapnel just one month after arriving in France. His widow remarried Sir Piers Legh, ADC to the Duke of Connaught while he was Governor-General of Canada, and moved to London.
