Alfred Huger (1788-1872)
of 140 Broad Street, Charleston; Postmaster & South Carolina State Senator
He was a noted Unionist and supporter of Andrew Jackson during the Nullification Controversy. Jackson appointed him Postmaster in 1834, a post he held until he resigned in 1865, rather than take the "Ironclad Oath." He was a well-known orator and served in the South Carolina Senate for ten years.
