Alexander Angus (1792-1856)

Merchant Grocer, of Bathgate; formerly of Rafford, Morayshire

He was a native of Rafford, Morayshire, and was likely to have been a son or nephew of James Angus (1753-1806) of Rafford (son of another Alexander) who died at Albany, New York. "Sandy" became a prosperous merchant grocer at Bathgate in West Lothian where he was a personal friend of the distinguished physician Sir James Young Simpson. He and his wife, Margaret Forrest, were the parents of eight children, five of whom settled in Canada and Minnesota. Most notable among their children was R.B. Angus, co-founder the Canadian Pacific Railway (dubbed "the world's greatest transportation system") and President of the Bank of Montreal.
