His fortune was estimated at $150,000 in 1846. He married Hannah, daughter of Commodore James Nicholson, the ill-suited Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Navy. They had five children of whom three survived to adulthood. His country home "Friendship Hill" (see images) in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, still stands today. It remained the Gallatin home until 1825 when his family tired of provincial life. He sold the house in 1832 to Swiss immigrant Albin Mellier and moved to New York City.
