1912-1979

After St. Dunstan's was destroyed by fire in 1936, Barbara Hutton bought the ruins and commissioned the English architect Leonard Rome Guthrie of Wimperis, Simpson & Guthrie, to build her this 35-bedroom home surrounded by 12-acres of gardens - which after those at Buckingham Palace continue to be the second largest private gardens in London. At the end of World War II, Hutton donated the property for a token $1 to the U.S. State Department and since 1955 it has served as the U.S. Ambassador's Residence.
