Wall Hall

Aldenham, Hertfordshire

Completed in 1802, for George Woodford Thellusson (1764-1811), M.P., an Anglo-French merchant banker of London, and his wife, Mary Anne Fonnereau (1768-1844). He left the mansion to the trustees of his father's estate who sold it the following year to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Pole (1757-1830). It became the home of his son-in-law, William Stuart, and remained in the Stuart family until 1910 when it was purchased by the American banker, J.P Morgan Jr. (1867-1943). During World War II, he leant it as a weekend home to his friend, the U.S. Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, father of JFK. After the war it became a teacher training college before being acquired by the University of Hertfordshire. In 2003, it was redeveloped into luxury apartments.
