Built from 1766 to 1788, for the 4th Duke of Manchester who chose its situation for the good duck shooting nearby. In 1788, William Bingham completed the Bingham Mansion in Philadelphia which was an expanded identical version of the original 18th century version of this house, when it was called Manchester House....

The original Hertford House before being remodelled in the 1870s

It became known as Hertford House from 1791 when the lease was taken on by the 2nd Marquis of Hertford. In the 1870s, the mansion was remodelled by the 4th Marquis of Hertford's illegitimate son, Richard Wallace (1818-1890), to house his extraordinary art collection that he had brought with him from Paris. After his death, the house was converted into a museum and today it houses the world famous "Wallace Collection" which is thought to have inspired Henry Clay Frick's gift to the American nation.
