William Yates Mortimer (1824-1891)

Real Estate Magnate, of New York City

He was educated in Europe and inherited the bulk of his father's considerable property empire. In 1884, he commissioned George B. Post to build the Mortimer Building (pictured) at 11 Wall Street that replaced an earlier building put up by his father in 1835. His heirs sold it in 1918 for $745,000. Through "clever management" he greatly increased his property portfolio. He married Anna, daughter of Aaron Thorpe, of Albany, New York, and had four children of whom two sons (listed) survived to adulthood.
