William Steuben de Zeng (1793-1882)

Manufacturer, of Geneva, Ontario Co., New York

He was born in Little Falls, New York, and moved to Geneva in 1812 where five years later (1817) he married Caroline Cutbush Rees, daughter of Major James Rees. He was very much identified with the growth and development of Geneva and its surrounding region. He led the effort to secure legislation and construction of the Cayuga & Seneca Canal. He was the owner of the Ontario Glass Works Company and co-owner of a cotton factory with James Fellows. He was a long-time member of the board of trustees of Hobart College, which his father-in-law had helped found, and he was one of the originators of the Manhattan Life Insurance Company in New York City.
