William Sidney Drayton (1813-1860)

Lt. William S. Drayton, U.S.N., of New York City & Staatsburg, Dutchess Co., N.Y.

He was born at Philadelphia and was a cousin of the Draytons of Drayton Hall near Charleston. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1832 to 1851. On October 23, 1850, he was married at New York City to Sylvia Livingston. Her father was President of the New York & Havre Steamship Company. William resigned from the Navy the following year to become shipping agent to his father-in-law's business. The Draytons had four children but only two (Maud and Percival) survived to adulthood. They lived between Bleecker Street in New York City and Staatsburg. After William died, his widow bought a property in Hyde Park and named it Drayton House.
