William Rogers Fanner (1892-1952)

Major W.R. Fanner C.B.E., M.C., Crown Advocate, of Cairo, Egypt

He was born in London, the son of William Fanner, and was educated at Cranleigh and London University (B.A., 1916). During World War I, he reached the rank of Major with the Lancashire Fusiliers and won the Military Cross (M.C.). In 1919, he was admitted to the Bar at Gray's Inn, London, and in 1939 he was appointed Crown Advocate at Cairo in Egypt where he was described as a "Barrister-at-law (with the firm of Perrott, Fanner & Sims Marshall) and Chairman and Director of Companies". He was awarded an O.B.E. (1943) and C.B.E. (1951). Outside of work, he was Chairman of the Turf Club and Secretary of the Maadi Sporting Club. In Cairo, he lived at 10 Bahgat Pasha, Aly Street, Zamalek; 11 Rue Moncrieff, Zamalek; and, "Eliakim" on Rue Bahr el-Azamam, Giza. In 1925, he married Henrietta Steensen de Leth, daughter of Erik Henningsen, of Copenhagen, Denmark. Their daughter, Henrietta, is Mrs. John Goelet.
