William P. Chapman (b.1811)
William P. Chapman, of "Whitby," Rye, Westchester Co., New York
He was born at Newtown, Connecticut, the twin brother of Henry. After graduating from Cornell, they moved to New York City and founded "an extensive" brokerage firm with offices at 4 Broadway. They shared a house together in Brooklyn before William commissioned his old friend, Alexander Jackson Davis, to build him Whitby which is today home to the Rye Golf Club and one of a handful of historic homes that constitute the Boston Post Road Historic District. William amassed an impressive collection of paintings by the Old Masters, as well as modern prints and photographs. He died a bachelor at Whitby and left everything to his twin brother.
