William Jay Schieffelin (1866-1955)
Ph.D., of 5 East 66th Street, New York City; President of Schieffelin & Co.
He was educated at Trinity School, Tivoli, New York; Columbia College School of Mines (1887); and, Munich University (Ph.D., 1889). He joined the family firm of Schieffelin & Co., wholesale druggists, becoming the firm's president in 1906. In 1898, he was commissioned as a Captain and fought in the Spanish War with the 12th New York Volunteers. He was influenced by his great-uncle, Henry Maunsell Schieffelin, and championed the rights of education for African-Americans while being a staunch crusader for government reform. He was President of the Citizens Union; Fellow of the London Chemical Society; and, a Member of the American Chemical Society. In 1891, he married Maria, a maternal granddaughter of William Henry Vanderbilt, and they had 9-children. They first lived at 5 East 66th Street (see images - commissioned by Mrs. Schieffelin in 1898) before moving in 1925 to their apartment at 620 Park Avenue, New York City.
