William Jarvis Boardman (1832-1915)

Lawyer, of 1801 P Street NW, Washington D.C.

He was born in Boardman, Ohio, so named for his uncle, U.S. Senator Elijah Boardman. He graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, and Harvard Law School. He practiced law in Cleveland before moving to Washington in 1888 where he built the residence in which he died, 1801 P Street (see images). He was active in charitable and philanthropic work, notably the development of the Red Cross. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emergency Hospital and Chairman of the Orphanage Board of St. John's Episcopal Church. He and his family were old friends of President William Howard Taft and Mrs. Taft. When they came to Washington shortly before the Taft inauguration the Tafts stayed with the Boardmans. He married a daughter of the founder of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University. They had four children.
