William Dow (1800-1868)
Founder of William Dow & Co., Brewers, Montreal
He was born at Muthill, Perthshire, where his family had been brewing since 1652. Having become a thorough brewer under his father, he emigrated to Montreal in about 1818. By 1863, his brewery was producing some 700,000 gallons of beer in comparison to Molson’s 142,000 gallons. He never married and lived at Strathearn House at the top of Beaver Hall Hill in Montreal, also maintaining a country estate at Côte Saint-Paul. His estate (estimated at £300,000) was left to his sister-in-law and her 4-daughters.
