William de Groot (1825-1898)
William de Groot, of New York City & Nice, France
He was born in New York City and entered the shipping business in the China Trade. He retired by 1891 and moved his family to Nice in the south of France where her daughters recalled there was a tea, dinner and dance everyday, with barely time to change between. He was an uncle of the celebrated architect, Thomas Hastings, and father of the artist and collector Adelaide Milton de Groot.
