William Craig Chaplin (1810-1856)
Lt. William Craig Chaplin, U.S.N., of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
He was born at Pittsburgh, and spent part of his early life in Florida where his father was a Judge. His paternal grandmother, Amanda (Huntington) Chaplin, was the sister of Samuel Huntington (1731-1796), Governor of Connecticut, President of the Continental Congress and Signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. His own uncles included Neville B. Craig, Editor of the Pittsburgh Gazette. William graduated from Annapolis and entered the U.S. Navy aged sixteen, in 1826. He served continuously until his unexpected death at the Officer's quarters in the Charlestown Navy Yard at Boston, Massachusetts. In 1833, he married Sarah Crossan, daughter of a later proprietor of Monongahela House, Pittsburgh. They were the parents of eight children.
