William Christopher Rhinelander (1790-1878)
Lt. William C. Rhinelander, of Rhinelander & Sons, Sugar Merchants, of New York
He lived in the vicinity of Washington Square, New York, and invested successfully in real estate - one of his purchases extended from Fifth Avenue to the East River. In 1867, an article appeared in the Galaxy listing the ten wealthiest men in New York. He came second on the list with a fortune estimated at $7,745,000, behind only William B. Astor, and ahead of Alex T. Stewart in third place.
