William Bradford (1590-1657)

2nd Governor of Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts Bay

The portraits, illustrations and statue attributed to him were romantic creations imagined up in the 19th century - Edward Winslow is the only original Plymouth colonist with an extant portrait painted from life. William Bradford was married twice, having one surviving son by his first marriage and three children who reached adulthood by his second marriage. His many famous descendants include William Collins Whitney, Frederic Edwin Church, Clint Eastwood, Hugh Hefner, Christopher Reeve, etc.
