He was a native of Londonderry in Northern Ireland and came to Philadelphia when he was eighteen becoming a partner in the firm of Stewart & Nesbitt. During the Revolution he served as aide-de-camp to Horatio Gates and was a close associate of George Washington who was godfather to his eldest son.
