Walter Richard Elmenhorst (1839-1894)
President of the Saint Lawrence Sugar Refinery; of 334 Peel Street, Montreal
He was born in London to German parents. Engaged in the sugar refining business, he came to New York where he was married to Martha Donner, a grand-daughter of Conrad Hinrich Donner of Donner's Park. In 1874, he came to Montreal and shortly afterwards became President of the Saint Lawrence Sugar Refinery. Having lost some money in stocks and shares he became depressed and shot himself in the stables at his home, 334 Peel Street. He was succeeded at the refinery by his niece's husband, Alfred Baumgarten, and he was survived by his widow and 4-children.
