Vincenzo Maranghi (1937-2007)

Vincenzo Maranghi (1937–2007) was an Italian banker best known for his long tenure at Mediobanca, Italy’s leading investment bank. Born in Florence, he studied law before joining Mediobanca in 1968 under the mentorship of its legendary founder, Enrico Cuccia. Maranghi quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Cuccia’s closest collaborator and eventual successor.

As CEO from 1990 to 2003, he navigated the bank through Italy’s evolving financial landscape, balancing its historic role as a power broker with the pressures of modernization and market reforms. Fiercely loyal to Cuccia’s vision, Maranghi resisted outside influence and corporate raiders, maintaining Mediobanca’s independence even as Italian banking underwent consolidation.

His tenure was marked by both strategic successes and boardroom battles, particularly with shareholder groups pushing for greater transparency and change. Despite stepping down as CEO in 2003, he remained a key figure in the bank until his passing in 2007. Maranghi’s legacy is that of a discreet yet powerful operator who shaped Italian finance behind the scenes.
