Victor Malcolm Wombwell (1893-1986)
Capt. Victor Malcolm Graham (Menzies) Wombwell, of Newburgh Priory, Yorkshire
He was educated at Harrow and served in World War I as an officer with the Scots Guards before becoming a private soldier and wandering through India. In 1920, he was declared bankrupt through gambling debts and poor business decisions. His fortunes improved in 1921 when his grandmother willed him the Wombwell family seat, Newburgh Priory, and he changed his surname from Menzies to Wombwell. But, perhaps most humiliating of all was his scandalous divorce from the heiress Sybil Neumann, eldest daughter of a Jewish South African diamond mining magnate, Sir Sigismund Neumann. After just one year of marriage, Sybil very publicly sued for divorce on the grounds of non-consummation.
