He was born in County Waterford, Ireland. In New York, he went into partnership with his brother-in-law, John Tonnelé, and by 1842 they were, "the most extensive Wool dealers in the country". In 1846, his fortune was estimated at $250,000. He had four children and was a great-grandfather of First Lady Eleanor (Roosevelt) Roosevelt.
