Col. Timothy Pickering (1745-1829)

2nd & 3rd U.S. Secretary of State, etc., and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts

He was born at Salem, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard in 1763. He became a lawyer but during the Revolution joined Washington's army at Morristown, New Jersey, and was soon afterwards appointed Adjutant-General. In 1789, he was a member of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention and from 1791 to 1795 he was U.S. Postmaster-General. In 1795, he was appointed U.S. Secretary of War and was also placed in charge of the Department of State. In 1801, he returned to Massachusetts and settled on a farm at Danvers, but soon afterwards returned to Washington, serving form 1803 to 1811. In 1814, he was a member of Congress and in 1817 was admitted onto the Massachusetts Executive Council. He died at Salem, Massachusetts. He married Rebecca White and they were the parents of ten children.
