Thomson Mason (1759-1820)

of "Hollin Hall" Alexandria, Fairfax Co., Virginia; Member of the General Assembly

He was born and tutored at Gunston Hall (see images). Having served in the militia, by 1783 he was managing the estate of his brother, George, who was abroad in France. In the same year, his father helped him establish a snuff manufactory with William Allison, although it was short lived. He was married in 1784, and took up residence at Gunston Hall where their first two children were born. His father gave him land on Little Hunting Creek where in 1787 he began building his own home, Hollin Hall, named after an estate that belonged to his Thomson ancestors in Ripon, Yorkshire (England). Thomson served in several public positions including Collector for the Port of Alexandria, Member of the General Assembly and Justice of Fairfax County.
