Stephen Salisbury (1835-1905)

III, of Worcester, Massachusetts; Banker & State Senator etc., died unmarried

He was born at Worcester, Massachusetts. Like his father, he was also an only child. He graduated from Harvard (1856) and continued his studies in Berlin and Paris. In 1861, he graduated from Harvard Law School and the following year travelled to Central America to study the ruins of the Mayan Indians. He succeeded his father in several positions including: President of the Worcester National Bank; President of Worcester County Institution for Savings; President of the American Antiquarian Society; and, Massachusetts State Senator. He was also a Director of the Worcester & Nashua Railroad Company and the Boston, Barre & Gardner Railroad. He was President of the Worcester County Horticultural Society; co-founder of the Worcester Art Museum, and a trustee of the State Mutual Life Assurance Company. In 1900, he erected the 56-foot high Bancroft Tower in honor of his father's old friend, George Bancroft. He wrote several articles on Central American and Mayan archaeology. He never married and after his death left his art collection and $3 million to the Worcester Art Museum.
