Sir Richard Butler (1699-1771)
5th Bt., M.P., of Ballintemple House, Co. Carlow
He was the great-great-grandson of Sir Thomas Butler (d.1642), created the 1st Baronet of Cloughgrenan in 1628, whose father was an illegitimate son of the 9th Earl of Ormond. He built the three-story Ballintemple House (see images) with about 25-rooms circa 1730 near Tullow, overlooking the River Slaney in County Carlow. He and his wife, Henrietta Percy (granddaughter of the Lord Mayor of London), had ten children (including the U.S. Senator and Founding Father, Major Pierce Butler) and the Butler Baronetcy still survives today but Ballintemple was lost to a fire in 1917.
