Sir James Coats (1834-1913)

1st Bt., J.P., of New York & Auchendrane, Ayrshire

He was the son and uncle of the founders of J.&P. Coats, Thread Manufacturers, of Paisley, Scotland. As a director of the family firm he spent some 35-years in New York and Rhode Island where he established a complex of mills before retiring to Auchendrane, Ayrshire. He married Sarah, daughter of John Auchincloss, Merchant, of New York City. Sarah's nephew (Hugh Dudley Auchincloss) was the stepfather of First Lady Jackie Kennedy. They were the parents of six children (listed).
