Semon Bache (1826-1891)
of Semon Bache & Co., Importers of Fancy Goods & Mirrors, New York City
He was born in Bavaria and in 1843 emigrated to Jackson, Mississippi, before coming to New York in 1846. In the following year (1947) he established Semon Bache & Co. importing fancy goods and mirrors. The firm expanded into the glass trade, dealing in window, plate, and mirror glass. In 1890, the firm consolidated its business in German mirror plate glass with six other businesses and formed the German Looking Glass Plate Co. that became the Manhattan Plate Glass Company three years later, two years after Semon's death. In 1849, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Aaron S. Van Praag and they had seven children.
