Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy (1765-1861)

Developer, Industrialist, & Founder of Pomeroy, Ohio

He was born in the Wyllys Mansion on Wyllys Hill, Hartford, Connecticut. His grandmother's brother, Eleazar Wheelock, founded Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. He was said to be a very handsome man "with uncommonly fine legs". He moved to Ohio where he purchased land (the town of Pomeroy is named for him) and having established Pomeroy, Sons & Co. with his son-in-law, Valentine B. Horton, they were influential in developing the coal, salt, and iron industries of the region. In 1793, at Middletown, he married Clarissa, daughter of Richard Alsop, of Middletown.
