Samuel Nightingale III (1782-1851)
President of the National Exchange Bank, Providence, Rhode Island
He was born at Providence, Rhode Island, and followed his father into the mercantile trade. In 1805, he served as a supercargo to the East Indies and China aboard the ship Hazard, owned by his uncle, William F. Megee Sr. and another relation, John Corlis. He became owner of at least three ships registered from Providence that did coastal and Spanish trade. He eventually moved into the textile industry and became owner of Georgiaville Mills at Georgiaville, Rhode Island. He also served as President of the National Exchange Bank in Providence and was active in the town’s First Congregational Church. He died in Hampton, New Hampshire. He was usually referred to as “Jr.” until his father’s death in 1814. He was married three times and had six children.
