Samuel Hazard (1714-1758)
Merchant, of Philadelphia
He was a merchant at Philadelphia and one of the chief proponents of a scheme to create a colony in Connecticut for the Christianization of the Indians. It would have almost certainly come to fruition were it not for his early demise. He was one of the original trustees of Princeton, and before his removal from New York to Philadelphia he was one of the elders in the Wall Street Presbyterian Church. He married Catherine, daughter of Matthew Clarkson by his wife Cornelia, daughter of Johannes de Peyster, Mayor of New York City. Their son, Ebenezer, served as U.S. Postmaster-General.
