Samuel Emlen (1766-1837)
of Philadelphia & "West Hill Manor" Burlington Co., New Jersey
He was a Quaker and a successful merchant in Philadelphia who built "West Hill Manor" between 1797 and 1799 to which he retired. When he died, he left a trust of $20,000 to build an agricultural school: "The Emlen Institute for the Benefit of Children of African and Indian Descent" in Carthagena, Ohio. The institute became "The Colored Normal School" at Cheney, Pennsylvania - now Cheney State University.
