Samuel Atkins Eliot (1798-1862)
Mayor of Boston & U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts
He was born in Boston, graduated from Harvard (1817) and traveled abroad. Returning home, he became an Alderman, School Commissioner, President of Academy of Music, President of Prison Discipline Society, Mayor of Boston (1837, 38 & 390, Treasurer of Harvard (1842-53), State Senator, and (after the resignation of Robert C. Winthrop) Whig Member of the U.S. Congress for Massachusetts (1850-51). He was the author of the History of Harvard College and Observations on the Bible. In 1826, he married Mary, daughter of the Shipping Merchant Theodore Lyman and they had six children including Charles William Eliot, 21st President of Harvard University.
