Roswell Lyman Colt (1779-1856)

Merchant of Baltimore, Maryland & Paterson, New Jersey

He was a native of Wethersfield, Connecticut, and a first cousin of Col. Samuel Colt, Founder of Colt's Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company. As a young man, he became a clerk in the firm of Oliver Brothers, Baltimore. After marrying Margaret Oliver in 1811, he became a partner in Oliver Brothers. After the death of his father-in-law, Robert Oliver, they moved to Paterson, New Jersey, but not long afterwards his wife separated from him and moved to New York City.
