He was born in Scotland at Edinburgh, the son of Robert and Helen (Cassie) Waterston. He came to America as a young man and was married in 1800 at Alfred, Maine, to Hephzibah, daughter of Captain Tobias Lord, of Kennebunk, Maine. Soon afterwards they moved to Boston where they had four surviving children (listed) and lived for the remainder of their lives.
