Robert Sale Hill (1850-1922)
of New York City & Tacoma Lodge, Surbiton Hill, Surrey
He was born at Granite Lodge, Kingstown, Co. Dublin, and was educated in England at Wellington College, Berkshire. His Anglo-Irish father - a grandson of Sir Hugh Hill, 1st Bt., M.P., of Brook Hall, Co. Londonderry - was a Captain in the Bengal Cavalry. Robert himself was named for his famous maternal grandfather, General Sir Robert "Fighting Bob" Sale, who captured Rangoon, stormed the formidable Fortress at Ghazni, commanded the garrison at the Siege of Jalalabad, and was killed in action during the First Anglo-Sikh War. Robert came to New York City as an actor and married the grandniece of U.S. Senator Thomas Fitz Randolph, Governor of New Jersey.
