Robert R. Livingston "The Chancellor" 1st Chancellor of New York
He was one of the five members of the Second Continental Congress chosen to draft the U.S. Declaration of Independence. He was the first Minister of Foreign Affairs (U.S. Secretary of State) and the Chancellor of New York State who gave the oath of office to George Washington as first President of the United States at Federal Hall in New York City. Under President Jefferson, he was appointed U.S. Minister (Ambassador) to France and was the senior negotiator for the Louisiana Purchase. He married and had two daughters who both married Livingstons (see Teviotdale).
