Robert Leslie Gault (1831-1895)

Robert L. Gault, Cotton Manufacturer, of 906 Sherbrooke Street, Montreal

He was born in Strabane, County Tyrone. He came with his family to Canada in 1842 and was educated privately before starting his mercantile career in the wholesale grocery business with John Torrance & Co. In 1857, he went into partnership with his brother, Andrew Frederick Gault, a position he retained for the rest of his career. He oversaw their business relations as well as devoting a large part of his time and money to the advancement of the cotton mills industry. He was a director of the Dominion Cotton Mills; the Canadian Colored Cotton Mills; the Montreal Cotton Mills; the Trent Valley Woollen Company; and, the Canada Coal & Railway Co. He was a member of the Montreal Board of Trade and President of the Wholesale Dry Goods Association. He married Charlotte Dorwin and had 8-children of whom five (listed) survived to adulthood.
