Robert Habersham (1783-1870)

Robert Habersham, of Savannah, Georgia

He was born at Savannah, Georgia. He was a grandson of James Habersham (1712-1775), President of the Provincial Council and Acting Governor of Georgia. Robert was a successful merchant and planter who continued the family's commercial shipping firm, Habersham & Harris, and their cotton business. Despite his losses both during and after the Civil War he still left a considerable fortune of $164,000 at his death. He was married three times: (1) In 1809, he married Mary O'Brien, and they had three children though Joseph their eldest son was presumed to have died in infancy; (2) In 1815, he married Elizabeth Neyle and they were the parents of two children; (3) In 1819, he married his first cousin, Mary Habersham, and they had six children.
