Richard Vaux (1751-1790)
Merchant, of Philadelphia
He was born in London. The son of a surgeon, George Vaux, he and his family were Quakers and he moved to Philadelphia in 1768 obtaining an apprenticeship in the dry goods firm of Samuel Sansom & Son. He later established himself as a merchant on his own account, but because he was suspected of being a Loyalist during the Revolution he was forced to leave Philadelphia and spent several years traveling on business in England, Europe and the West Indies. He returned to Philadelphia in 1783 and married Ann Roberts, the daughter of a merchant. They had two children (listed).
