Richard Upjohn (1802-1878)

Founding President of the American Institute of Architects

He was the founder and first president of the American Institute of American Architects. He is remembered for his Gothic-Revival churches and for helping to popularize the Italianate style in American domestic architecture. He added the library wing to the Nightingale-Brown House in Providence and carried out improvements at Lindenwald for retired President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862)
