Richard Hutchinson (1598-1670)
of Milk Street, London; Iron Merchant & Treasurer of the Royal Navy
He was a grandson of John Hutchinson (1515-1565), Lord Mayor of Lincoln, and moved from Lincolnshire to London where he became a very wealthy iron merchant. He purchased large estates in Ireland (he is the direct ancestor of the Hely-Hutchinson family, Earls of Donoughmore) and was appointed Treasurer of the Royal Navy. His wealth was such that despite losing property valued at £60,000 in the Great Fire of London (1666), he still died a very rich man. His elder brother, William, emigrated to America (as did his own sons to further his business interests there) and he was the great-great-grandfather of Thomas Hutchinson, Governor of Massachusetts.
