Rev. John Holmes Agnew (1804-1865)

D.D., of Peeksville, New York; 1st President of Ann Arbor University

He was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Seminary at Princeton. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was awarded a Doctorate in Divinity (D.D.) in 1852. He was the first editor of the Eclectic Magazine; Editor of The Knickerbocker; Professor of Ancient Languages at the University of Michigan; and, the first President of Ann Arbor University. In 1829, he married Sarah Emeline Taylor, of Newark, New Jersey and had several children. An obituary remembered him as "generous, benevolent, social, genial, gentlemanly, scholarly".
