Rev. John Frelinghuysen (1727-1754)

Teacher & Pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church, Somerville, New Jersey

He was born, educated, and ordained in Holland. He was the son of a clergyman; all four of his brothers were clergymen; and, both his sisters married clergymen. He came out to New Jersey with his father in 1750 and took up residence (see image) at Somerville where he gathered around him a Preparatory and Divinity School which was the nucleus of Rutgers University that was developed by the man, Dr. Hardenbergh, who married his widow after his premature death in 1754. His wife, Dinah, was the daughter of a wealthy East India merchant of Amsterdam. He was survived by two children (listed), including the distinguished General and U.S. Senator F.T. Frelinghuysen.
