Raphael Pumpelly (1837-1923)
Geologist & Adventurer; President of the Geological Society of America, etc.
He was married in 1869 to Eliza, daughter of Otis Shepard who ran a commercial bakery with his brothers at Dorchester, Massachusetts. They had six children, four of whom (listed) survived infancy. In 1880, he built a magnificent home in Newport (see images) designed by his friend Calvert Vaux. It remained their winter home, but in 1883 having "found the Newport climate too relaxing during the summer for the children (we) sought a place in the mountains". That year, on visiting his sister-in-law, Lucy Hill, at Dublin, New Hampshire, he bought two farms and built "Auf der Höhe" ("On-the-Heights") on an 1,800-foot hill with views of both Mount Monadnock and Lake Monadnock where the "Pumpelly Trail" and "Pumpelly Ridge" is named for him.
